~ Andy LaVerne is a fine pianist who has built his
style on the foundation of Bill Evans, Chick
Corea, and a fusion of jazz and classical music.
LaVerne began studying as a classical piano
student at Juilliard when he was eight. After
discovering jazz, he took lessons from Bill Evans.
He toured with Woody Herman's big band
(1973-1975); he then played with John Abercrombie
and Miroslav Vitous, before playing with Stan Getz
(1977-1980), often playing electric piano. In the
1980's, he filled the piano chair in the
Brubeck-LaVerne Trio with Chris and Dan Brubeck.
Since that time, LaVerne has concentrated on
acoustic piano, has become a jazz educator, and
has recorded numerous albums / CDs for a variety
of labels including Storyville, Jazzline,
SteepleChase, DMP, Triloka, Concord, and some
smaller labels. The CD under review here was
recorded 30 October - 3 November 1984 for DMP.
~ In 1984 LaVerne received an NAE grant to
organize a Carnegie Hall tribute to his mentor
Bill Evans. This CD is a studio version of that
concert. The musicians are LaVerne (piano), Eddie
Gomez (bass), Peter Erskine (drums), John
Abercrombie (guitar on tracks 2, 3, 7, 8), and the
Essex String Quartet (on tracks 5 and 9).
