When Mazda installed the engine in the Miata, they had to make a few changes to fit it in a longitudinal RWD configuration. This included replacing the distributor with a cam angle sensor for distributorless ignition (yay!) and moving the coolant outlet from the back to the front of the head. This may not sound like a problem, but unfortunately it is. The way the water is plumbed inside the engine means that very little of it gets distributed to the rear, leaving the back cylinders hotter than the front and dropping the efficiency of the cooling system fairly dramatically.
