Nitrate and Phosphate Reduction:
How does it work?
On natural reefs, carbon is an important factor in the biological reduction of nutrients by bacteria. The effect that Carbon has on the efficiency of bacteria can be thought of in a sense as the same effect "Red Bull" energy drinks have on humans. If a carbon source is available to bacteria in the marine environment, the available bacteria will remove MUCH more phosphate and nitrate from the aquarium water. In the marine aquarium however this helpful carbon source is not as available to bacteria as on natural reefs. The goal then is to give the bacteria this helpful carbon source which they need to do a much better job in keeping our reefs clean.
NP Biopellets are pelletized biodegradable polymers(carbon source) that reduce the amount of nitrate and phosphate in marine aquarium water by converting it into bacteria, which can be used by corals as a food source or skimmed out of the system. The pellets will allow aerobic growth of bacteria which consequently will consume nitrate and phosphate simultaneously. The bacteria will use up the carbon from the Biopellets, whilst simultaneously taking nitrogen and phosphorus from the water as nitrate and (ortho)phosphate. This conversion of organic Biopellets (together with inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus) into microbial biomass is called immobilization. In addition, anaerobic layers will develop, resulting in additional denitrification.
The use of biopellets helps to keep the aquarium water at more desirable levels by reducing unwanted algae, increasing the coloration of SPS corals and increasing the calcification rate of SPS corals(making the corals grow faster) as well as encouraging coralline algae growth.
