A beautiful, 20 years+ contemporary Dayak terabai or carved wood battle-shield (perisai) painted with elaborate red, yellow and black traditional motif. This battle shield is carved out from a single block of soft wood, the ‘lemetak’ design is cut into the wood and carefully hand-painted. Hexagonal-shaped with pointed ends and the length from one point to another point is about 4 feet.
To use in battle, strips of stout rattan or leather may be bound across the wood and laced closely to the wood with finer strips. The handle is a simple vertical bar for the grasp of the left hand. It was believed that sometimes a gemstone was attached in the middle of the handle to enable the owner to channel his energy to the terabai shield.
This terabai shield however, was better suited decorative and stage performance purposes. We used this particular piece as a wall- decoration.
No cracks or breaks in the wood. The paint is a bit faded due to aging and tiny holes made by wood insects can be found on the terabai shield. Shipping to anywhere within Malaysia can be arranged per buyer’s request.
