Few cars have blurred the line between sports car and luxury saloon as convincingly as the Porsche Panamera. With the 2013 facelift, the Porsche Panamera S (970.2) evolved into a more polished and technically accomplished grand tourer – preserving Porsche’s unmistakable sporting character while introducing a more modern, efficient and technologically advanced powertrain.

When the first-generation Panamera was launched, it marked a bold departure for Porsche. Here was a genuine four-door grand tourer offering the performance and engineering integrity expected of the marque, combined with the comfort, space and practicality required of a luxury executive car. By the time the facelifted model arrived in 2013, Porsche had refined the formula considerably, introducing subtle visual revisions alongside far more significant mechanical improvements beneath the surface.

Chief among these changes was the replacement of the previous 4.8-litre naturally aspirated V8 with a new 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6. While the outgoing V8 delivered its performance with traditional naturally aspirated character, the new twin-turbo engine represented a decisive step forward in efficiency, performance and everyday usability.

Producing 420hp and 520Nm of torque, the 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 delivered 20hp and 20Nm more than the preceding 4.8-litre engine. More importantly, its maximum torque arrived much earlier in the rev range, giving the facelifted Panamera S stronger response and more effortless acceleration in real-world driving. The result was a car that felt quicker, more immediate and more refined, while also benefiting from an 18% improvement in fuel efficiency.

The lighter and more compact V6 was positioned farther back in the chassis than the outgoing V8, helping to sharpen the Panamera S’s responses and reduce the sense of weight over its front axle. Combined with Porsche’s carefully developed chassis, precise steering and exceptional levels of grip, it allowed the substantial four-door to change direction with an agility that belied its dimensions.

Paired with Porsche’s 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission, the Panamera S delivered rapid, seamless gear changes and an impressive breadth of ability. It could settle comfortably into long-distance motorway cruising before transforming into a genuinely engaging performance car at the press of the accelerator. The twin-turbo V6 and PDK combination suited the Panamera’s grand-touring character perfectly, providing effortless pace without sacrificing refinement.

The facelift also introduced a cleaner and more resolved exterior design. Revised front and rear bumpers, larger air intakes, updated lighting elements and a repositioned rear number plate gave the Panamera a broader, lower and more contemporary presence.
