BMW introduced the 525i for the 1982 model year as a variant of the BMW E28 5 Series. The 525i was powered by BMW's M30B25 engine. This fuel injected 2.5L inline six unit generated 148hp, and sent its power through manual or automatic transmissions to the rear wheels.

Instrumentation consists of a 240-km/h speedometer, a tachometer, and gauges for coolant temperature and fuel level. The six-digit odometer shows 115k kilometers.

The 2.5-liter M30 inline-six is equipped with Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection and was factory rated at 148 horsepower and 159 lb-ft of torque. The oil filter housing gasket was replaced in 2025, and an oil change was performed in April 2025.
