This car's power train layout specification was an expensive high spec upgrade option from the factory. Owners had to pay premium price above the car's retail for this upgrade. This meant an upgrade from the basic Single Cam M103 12v engine to a more powerful Twin Cam M104 24v engine. This car also has the upgraded automatic transmission from 4 speed to 5 speed factory option. This 5 speed automatic transmission made ALOT of difference in performance with shorter and more responsive gear changes as opposed to the conventional sluggish 4 speed transmission. As a result, it boosted outstanding acceleration and fantastic fuel consumption! Hence, one should be aware that all these upgraded options were never standard in the R129 300SL.
