19th Century LAMPUNG CEREMONIAL SHIPS CLOTH

Lampung Tampan ceremonial cloths from South Sumatra, Indonesia, date back to the 19th Century and were often referred to as “ships cloths”, traditionally used in important ceremonial exchanges including marriages and status displays.

This authentic Tampan featuring a classic design with stylized ships, human figures, and geometric motifs symbolizing journeys, trade, and spiritual transition, is richly detailed with a balanced composition reflecting the cultural significance of these textiles within Lampung society.

Sourced from a private collection, the Tampan has been intricately handwoven with yarns using natural dyes in earthy tones of red-brown, indigo, and beige and has been mounted in a wooden frame for display, making it a striking decorative work of art.
