Escape from Tyranny in Malaysia by Zulkifli Haji Ahmad is an autobiographical chronicle in which the author recounts his experiences of political oppression in Malaysia, particularly his arrests and detentions under the Internal Security Act (ISA). He describes how between 1969–1970 and again in 1975 he was detained without trial, suffering under laws that enabled the state to restrain dissent and punish political opponents under vague charges. Zulkifli details how, in the period before he was to study law in London, multiple arrest warrants were issued against him, reflecting the insecurity faced by activists during that era. Throughout the book he reflects on human rights violations, abuses of power, and the climate of fear lived by dissidents; yet he also conveys resilience, maintaining hope for justice and reform in a system marred by legal authoritarianism
