“May 13 Fact & Fiction: Current Malaysian Challenges” by Kua Kia Soong argues that the 13 May 1969 racial riots were not simply a spontaneous eruption of communal tensions following unfavourable election results but rather part of a larger political upheaval engineered by an emerging state capitalist class within UMNO to wrest control from moderate leaders such as Tunku Abdul Rahman. Based on declassified British and foreign diplomatic documents, the book challenges the official narrative that blames only opposition celebrations or leftist provocations, showing instead coordination, inadequate response by security forces, and use of the riots as justification for implementing the New Economic Policy and institutionalising preferential race-based policies, all of which, Kua claims, have shaped Malaysia’s political economy up to the present and impeded genuine reconciliation.
