WHY DEADWOOD IS THE MOST FAMOUS WILD WEST TOWN AFTER TOMBSTONE:

DEADWOOD 1876 — LAWLESS GOLD RUSH TOWN:

Deadwood, Dakota Territory founded 1876 during Black Hills Gold Rush — population exploded from 0 to 5,000+ in months. No law, saloons, claim jumpers, unalive daily. Needed a Marshal who could tame hell.

1. SETH BULLOCK — First Marshal of Deadwood 1876-1877 (Photo #2)
Legendary lawman — Canadian-born — appointed March 1876 as FIRST Marshal of Deadwood. Tamed the town with honor, courage, resolute leadership. Friend of Theodore Roosevelt. Later became U.S. Marshal for South Dakota. His badge was this exact circle-star style!

2. WILD BILL HICKOK KILLED IN DEADWOOD — Aug 2 1876 (Photo #3)
James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok — most famous gunfighter — shot dead at Nuttal & Mann's Saloon No.10 playing poker holding Aces & Eights — The Dead Man's Hand. Photo #3 shows original newspaper: "THE BLACK HILLS PIONEER — WILD BILL HICKOK KILLED — Aug 2 1876". He died holding those cards in Deadwood. This Marshal badge patrolled that same saloon!
