The Reluctant Politician: Tun Dr. Ismail and His Time is a foundational biography detailing the life and political career of Tun Dr. Ismail Abdul Rahman, Malaysia’s former Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister. Built upon intimate access to his private papers and an extensive series of interviews with his family, friends, and contemporary political figures, the book provides an invaluable insider's view into Malaysia’s journey toward Merdeka (independence). It analyzes crucial events in Malaysian history, including the delicate UMNO-MCA relationships, the separation of Singapore from Malaysia, and the nation-rebuilding process following the May 13 racial riots. Rather than portraying him just as a statesman, the narrative examines his deep personal dedication to building a multiracial, equitable democracy while balancing the internal conflicts of his ruling party.
