    From The Book Flap:
Sustained by observation, experience, knowledge and vitality, Asia, Gods and Cities is a brilliant travel narrative with a big canvas by George Woodcock, the successor to his Faces of India. In the autumn of 1963 he and his wife went eastward through Suez, touched Asia at Aden, and then spent the winter and spring travelling in a number of Eastern countries the Moslem lands of Pakistan and Malaya, the ancient Buddhist kingdoms of Thailand and Cambodia, the colonies of Hong Kong and Macao, obstinate survivors of imperial pasts, and finally paradoxical Japan, the most modern and in some ways the most traditional country of Asia.
George Woodcock catches in his account the characteristic colour of each of the countries he visits, and his observations range over social and racial relations, art and architecture, the historical past and the political present. Most of all, he seeks to show the great changes that are sweeping over Asia against the background of traditions that often seem immovable. He shows the complexity and variety of Asia, the different ways of life and different attitudes of its modern peoples, and the splendours of its ancient cities, such as Angkor, Taxila and Kyoto, yet at the same time he does not neglect the crowded, fascinating and often appalling modern cities of the East Karachi and Singapore, Tokyo and Hong Kong.
Asia, Gods and Cities is illustrated with photographs taken during the journey by Ingeborg Woodcock.
