This book is intended to be another contribution to the library of students of Singapore and Southeast Asian current affairs.
It is the story of the important role that Lee Kuan Yew, Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore, the smallest nation-state in the Commonwealth, played at the 1969 meeting in London of the Commonwealth Prime Ministers. Lee's speeches and comments are fully reported. The Official Communiqué, one of the longest ever devised at such a meeting, is given at the end of the book, unabridged.
In addition, the book contains most, if not all, that was known and reported of the discussions on the defense of Southeast Asia, especially Malaysia and the Republic of Singapore, that went on before, during, and shortly after the conference. One Singapore newspaper thought this was the best thing that came out of the meeting of the Prime Ministers.
Whether this will prove correct or otherwise, what can be said now is that all this forms an interesting chapter in what may well be a lofty and continuing development in Southeast Asian history.
