In this, the second volume of Sources of Chinese Tradition, the editors present translations from Chinese sources that illustrate Chinese thought in the con temporary world. Topics include such modern movements as nationalism, social ism, and communism, and cover political, economic, and social questions, as well as philosophical and religious speculations, and economic doctrines and reforms. Popular religious cults and secret societies are dealt with in the Appendix. The philosophical school of Intuition is also included. The first reactions of Chinese scholar officials to the challenge of the West are contrasted with the messianic movement of the peasant Taipings under Hung Hsiu-ch'uan, who called himself Heavenly King and younger brother of Jesus Christ. Finally the reader is given the views of the Republican leader Sun Yat-sen, the Christian-Confucianist Chiang Kai-shek, the pragmatist-reformer Hu Shih, the master technician of the Communist Revolution. Mao Tse-tung, and many others. This volume contains a chronological table of Chinese history from 1839 to 1957.
