Synopsis:
Madama Butterfly, now one of the world's best joved operas, was met with derision when it was first performed in 1904 at La Scala, Milan, and Puccini immediately revised it.
It tells the heartbreaking story of the marriage between a geisha known as Butterfly, and a womanising American naval Lieutenant called Pinkerton. Pinkerton's unfaithfulness destroys the loyal Butterfly. Of all Puccini's operas it is the most truly tragic.
Raina Kabaivanska has made the title role a speciality and is partnered, in this production in the open air arena in Verona, by Nazzareno Antinori as Pinkerton
