In this issue, the British mutant superhero team Excalibur faces their twisted Nazi counterparts from Earth-597, known as Lightning Force. Meanwhile, Moira MacTaggert (Earth-597) and her bodyguard Callisto kidnap Brigadier Alysande Stuart, attempting to escape into Earth-616 despite knowing they cannot return to their own dimension. The rest of Excalibur—Nightcrawler, Shadowcat, Phoenix, and Meggan-battle their alternate selves, highlighting the disturbing mirror image of what they could have become under tyranny. The subplot introduces Widget, a mysterious robot-like entity tied to Kitty Pryde, foreshadowing future storylines.
The issue emphasizes the moral ambiguity of victory, with Rachel Summers noting that sometimes battles end in stalemates rather than clear triumphs. This theme reflects Claremont’s broader exploration of identity, alternate realities, and the fragile line between heroism and corruption.
