British Missions to Cochin China: 1778–1822 (MBRAS Vol. XXXIV, Parts 3 & 4), edited by Alastair Lamb, provides a detailed account of a series of British diplomatic and commercial missions to southern Vietnam between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, involving envoys such as Thomas Forrest Chapman, John Crawfurd, and Lord Macartney; it shows how the British, largely acting through the East India Company, attempted to secure trade opportunities, political alliances, and a strategic foothold in Southeast Asia but were repeatedly unsuccessful due to deep cultural and diplomatic misunderstandings, the rigid and hierarchical nature of the Vietnamese court under the Nguyễn dynasty, and local suspicion of foreign influence especially amid existing French involvement while also revealing that British efforts were inconsistent and lacked sustained commitment; although no lasting agreements were achieved, the missions generated valuable firsthand knowledge about Vietnam’s political structure, economy, and society, illustrating both the ambitions and limitations of early British expansion in the region.
