The Three Golliwogs by Enid Blyton is considered controversial and expensive mainly because of its portrayal of racially insensitive characters. The book features three characters named Golly, Woggie, and Nigger, all of whom are golliwogs—a type of doll based on Blackface minstrel imagery. These characters were common in early 20th-century British literature but are now widely recognized as offensive racial stereotypes of Black people.
Because of this, the book has been criticized for perpetuating racist caricatures. Modern publishers have largely ceased printing the book, making existing copies rare and thus more valuable to collectors.
